How do drugs influence our brain and behavior? Why are some drugs more commonly used than others? Are therapeutic drugs effective for treating mental illness? This course will address these and related questions. We will survey the physiological, cognitive, socio-political, and cultural impacts of drug use. Topics will include the mechanisms of psychotropic drug actions, clinical trial processes, the efficacy of therapeutic drugs, substance use disorder, and social influences and concerns related to recreational and therapeutic drug use.
