EXPRL 194 Special Topics in Experiential Learning: Field Research for Social Change: • 3 Cr.

This course introduces students to a process of sustained inquiry and discovery around complex problems to co-generate knowledge for social change. Most problems require working across disciplines, across social, economic, and racial/ethnic differences, across cultures, and across social and ecological systems to find actionable solutions. This course will build student’s collaborative research skills through focusing on building experience with universally useful methodologies, such as participatory action research, group facilitation, surveys, focus groups, interviews, field observation and notes, design thinking, historical research, and mapping. The objective of this course is for students to ask questions of their community and strategize how to answer those questions, with respect to the human and natural world, and with respect to ethics, culture, and historical context. This class is hands-on, experiential, and centered around a term long collaborative research project. It serves as an introduction to thinking like a scholar, organizing thought and information, synthesizing methods and perspectives, and answering complex questions through a process of collaborative discovery. This course is foundational for any young scholar of any discipline to build experience in asking good questions and choosing the right tools to answer them that are adaptive and responsive to the surrounding community and context. Students will build up a fundamentals toolbox and scholarly mindset that is useful across many professional fields to produce "actionable" knowledge that they and their communities can use to solve the problems they face.

Fee: $31.50 eLearning Fee.
